What’s the difference between GoPro Hero 7 Black, Silver and White

GoPro has recently released the latest version of its GoPro Hero camera with three variations, Black Silver and White. Each variety of the Hero 7 comes with different features, abilities and price. It’s important to know what each camera can do so you can choose the right one for you. In this post I’ll take you through the differences between each version of the GoPro Hero 7 series.

Analysis

So what does all this mean? Well I think it’s pretty clear just from looking at the specs that the GoPro Hero 7 Black is the most advanced and capable camera of the three. It can shoot 4K video at 60fps, create super slow motion video up to 240fps and features GoPro’s new stabilization software, Hypersmooth. Check out an example of what this software can do:

 

So for anyone who wants to shoot some serious action footage it might be worth investing in the Black version of the Hero 7. The other versions also have some more basic stabilization software but notwhere near as good as the Hero 7 Black.

Video Quality

Both the Hero 7 Black and Hero 7 Silver can shoot 4K resolution video which is pretty much the gold standard for high quality video. The main difference between the two is that the Silver is limited to 4K at 30fps whereas the Black can shoot 4K at 60fps, allowing you to create smoother looking video or even slow motion. The quality of the video is fantastic in both cameras, with excellent dynamic range, color contrast and light.

I think the quality is pretty stunning and those who are more familiar with color correction and editing may even be able to get even higher quality if using the Protune setting available on the Hero 7 Black. The White version of the Hero 7 is limited to just 1080 at 60fps, which doesn’t really cut it these days as far as I’m concerned.

 

Slow Motion

One of the best new features of the Hero 7 Black is its ability to shoot super slow motion video. At 4K the Black version can shoot 60fps and if you are willing to sacrifice some quality you can go all the way up to 240fps at 1080p.

The ability to shoot at 240fps at HD resolution is revolutionary for GoPro, and it allows you to create some stunning video as we can see. The Silver and White versions of the Hero 7 don’t have the same prowess when it comes to slow motion, and in both cases you can only slow down the video 2x compared with 8x that the Black is capable of.

Other Features

Livestream: The Hero 7 Black is the only version that allows you to livestream. This is accomplished over the app and can connect straight to Facebook or YouTube’s livestreaming service.

GPS: Another key feature for true adventurers is GPS and the Black version of the Hero 7 is the only one with internal GPS.

Battery: Again, the Hero 7 Black is the only version with a removable battery, meaning you can have spares ready in case you run out half way through your day of shooting.

Overview and Conclusion

I think it’s pretty clear which camera is technically superior and which one I personally prefer. I do think that if you are going to get a GoPro camera, you might aswell get the best one. The Hero 7 Black has so many new features that it’s a real upgrade from the last Hero 6. Hypersmooth stabilization and super slow motion are both awesome new features which are missing from the Silver and White versions of the Hero 7 series.

The Silver version could be a decent alternative for people really not interested in stabilization or slow motion, perhaps for filming vacations or family activities rather than action shots. Still, it seems a shame to miss out of the new innovations for the sake of $100. The White version of the camera seems pretty pointless to me. Sure, it’s much cheaper, but you can get even cheaper non-GoPro action cameras that can shoot higher resolution video for a lower price.

Even though it’s the most expensive, the Hero Black 7 is by far the best version of this camera and has pretty much all the new innovations GoPro has come up with since last year. Still, if you are looking for cheaper options then the Silver and White versions are available to you.
